Medicare may cover medically necessary, part-time or intermittent skilled nursing care at home when you meet its eligibility requirements. Coverage depends on your care needs and the services ordered by your doctor or other qualified health care provider.
Medicare does not cover 24-hour care at home or personal care when that is the only care you need. If you have Medicare Advantage or another insurance plan, check your benefits and any authorization requirements with your plan.
Medicare generally requires that you need part-time or intermittent skilled care and meet its homebound criteria. A doctor or other qualified health care provider must complete the required face-to-face assessment, order home health care, and a Medicare-certified agency must provide it.
A prior hospital stay is not required for Medicare home health eligibility. Your care needs, plan benefits, and any required authorizations must still be reviewed before services begin.
